In 2019, we honoured a beloved young woman, Maiko Kosugi, who was my student, friend and very much like a daughter to our family. I first met Maiko almost 25 years earlier, when she was only 10. She was a student at DEC through Jr HS, HS and as a young adult. She was a wonderful student who loved to learn, and she used her English skills travelling all over this world. She was chosen to represent Yokaichi as a scholarship student at NMU in Marquette, MI, in 2003. Students typically stay for 1 year, but Maiko stayed longer and graduated from NMU in 2007. Like everywhere she went, she was well-loved in Marquette.
In early 2018, Maiko was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour and she left us on Sept 18th, 2019. Surrounded by a lovely, caring family, Maiko fought for every second she could have in this world. She is a testament to a love of life, and a teacher to us all. She is terribly missed.
今年は、私の生徒であり、友人であり、私たちの家族にとって娘のようであった愛する若い女性、小杉麻衣子を称えます。 私が初めて麻衣子に会ったのは、25年前の彼女が10歳のときでした。彼女は、中学、高校を通じて、また成人したのちもDECの生徒でした。 彼女は学ぶのが大好きな素晴らしい生徒で、英語のスキルを活かして世界中を旅しました。 彼女は、2003年に八日市を代表してミシガン州マーケットにある北ミシガン大学（NMU）に奨学生として選ばれ、8か月間滞在したのち、2007年にはNMUを卒業しました。
2018年のはじめ、麻衣子は癌性脳腫瘍と診断され、先月私たちのもとを去りました。 愛情あふれ、思いやりのある家族に囲まれた麻衣子は間断なく力ある限り癌と闘いました。彼女は人生を愛するとはどういうことかを身をもって証明してくれました。私たち全員の師です。 彼女は多くの人にとってかけがえのない存在です。
I first met Martin Stack at Bi-Lingual in Otsu, Japan, in 1991. Marty and I became friends right away and by the time I left that company in spring of '93 (to open DEC), it became obvious that we would continue to be in each others' lives and would someday work together again. In 2007, 14 years later, Marty joined DEC for 5 years. In about 2011, he joined me on a quest to make a digital publishing company, DEC Publishing, around which we shared some great times, and some real diappointment. Through it all, Martin was a rock and my confidante, and ensured that I would never give up this goal. He connected us to the Hiragana Times and others, and always looked for opportunities throughout his network, which was always growing. When we got into VR, he was right there as well, and we shared good times with Colin, Ankur and Dan. Marty also introduced me to Hitoshi Matsumoto, his dear friend, knowing that we would also one day find a way to work together.
In 2018 we honoured this fallen brother, teacher, colleague and friend. Long-time mainstay to this event, he passed away on August 22, 2018. Marty succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer, diagnosed a year earlier. Surrounded by a devoted wife and a large, tight-knit family till the very end, Marty was well-loved in both Michigan and Japan. He is sorely missed.
私は1991年に大津のバイリンガル英会話スクールでマーティン・スタックに初めて出会いました。マーティと私はすぐに友達になり、93年の春DECを開くためその会社を辞めたとき、お互いの人生の中で、いつかまた一緒に働くことになるだろうと思っていました。 14年後の2007年、マーティはそれから5年間DECで講師として働いてくれました。 また2011年頃には、彼はデジタルパブリッシング会社であるDEC Publishingの仕事に携わってくれました。その中で私たちは素晴らしい時間を共有し、また失望も共有しました。そのすべてを通して、マーティンは揺らぐことなく、私の親友であり、私はこの目標を決してあきらめないと誓いました。彼は私たちをひらがなタイムズをはじめ、彼の知り合いを紹介してくれ、彼のネットワークを通じてビジネスチャンスを探し、拡げてくれました。私たちがVRに携わったとき、彼もそこにいて、コリン、アンカー、ダンと楽しい時間を分かち合いました。マーティはまた、私たちがいつか共に働くことを信じながら、彼の親友である松本人志氏を私に紹介してくれました。
2018年、私たちはこの亡くなった兄弟、教師、同僚、そして友人を称えました。このイベントの長年の尽力者であった彼は、2018年8月22日に亡くなりました。マーティはその1年前に診断された、進行の早い癌に屈しました。最後まで献身的なご夫人と大家族に囲まれながらマーティは、ミシガン州と日本の両方で愛されていました。彼は大変惜しまれています。
